Chapter 59: Hand and Foot

The rest of the “ranked soldiers” in Whitey’s crew began to ask questions about his whereabouts. Many of them had resorted to actually calling him on the phone, which they were not allowed to do unless there was a serious situation. They knew they had to go through Lucky. 

They also knew that Whitey and Themba had gone away for a romantic weekend. But that was 5 days ago. 

On the 6th day, Lucky instructed Whitey’s driver to take three other soldiers with him to check on Whitey’s lodge in the Knysna Forest.

The crew came back a few hours later and confirmed that Whitey’s car was parked at the lodge, but that there was no sign of him or Themba. 

“Go to the cops immediately and make a statement about it, this needs to be on record. I’ll make some calls to our other friends to see if anyone knows anything,” Lucky said with some concern in his voice. 

 Two days after the statement was made with the police, a search party combing the forest near the lodge with sniffer dogs made a gruesome discovery.

The police issued an official announcement which was carried in the local media, but did not receive any coverage outside of the Garden Route area. 

Stanley read the article and was in no doubt about what had happened. The report mentioned that the police sniffer dogs were able to retrieve a hand and a leg, apparently belonging to two separate individuals. The officer who discovered the body parts said that it looked like body parts were chewed on, “like by a wild animal, maybe a leopard.”

The officer said it was too early to identify who the body parts belonged to but added that two males had been reported missing and that one of them has a similar tattoo that was found on the hand in the forest.

Lucky insisted that the hand and leg be returned to him after the police had confirmed that they belonged to Whitey and Themba. The official report and subsequent press release by the police said that it was “very likely that the two men were attacked by a rogue leopard, which had been spotted in the area on several occasions recently. The two men were apparently sharing the lodge during hunting weekend.”

The story, as odd as it sounded, was accepted without suspicion by the rest of Whitey’s gang members. The first thing they did was to support Lucky’s efforts to hold a funeral for Whitey and Themba, or rather their remaining body parts.
