He smiled knowingly. He was a seasoned politician; he would get out of this mess somehow. Sure, he would have to kiss her ass, clean her boots, dance to her tune, do whatever it took to remain in the game and fight another day.

He had no choice, his political future depended on it.

He called Elaine to congratulate her.

The call was strange, he thought. She accepted his congratulations with… he couldn’t’ quite put his finger on it… it wasn’t arrogance… it wasn’t validation… it wasn’t… what in the hell was it…he wondered.

He wondered how long he could remain in the shadows. He wondered how long his “partners” would “behave”, he wondered if he had bitten off more than he could chew and if in fact he had just wasted all that money.

His phone had been surprising silent all evening, even after the results were announced. But he was pleased about it, for it meant that his role in the election had been successfully kept hidden.

Natasha called earlier and ran a few quotes by him for a media release congratulating all the winning parties provincially. It was a generic press release that did not convey particular praise or approval for anyone, instead the overall message was a thank you to the voters of the country for ensuring that democracy works.

He decided to call it a night. After brushing his teeth, he slipped into bed next to his wife, who was fast asleep.

The time on his cell phone reflected 02:03.
