Chapter 55: Take Back Our Land

He looked at his wrist-watch before entering his house. It was 4:30 am. He still had enough time to have a quick hot shower and to dispose of his clothes before his girlfriend woke up. He felt tired, but strangely euphoric, he was the new gang boss and everyone would recognise him now and pay him homage.

“Good morning, sunrise is at 6am today, according to the weather service.”

Shawn read the text from the unknown number and breathed easier. It was the coded message he was anticipating from Lucky which would confirm that the “obstacle” had been removed.

 A late-night statement issued on Elaine’s website announced that the third R10m cheque would “probably be discovered once the polls had closed on Tuesday.” She also urged people to vote for the United Coloured Party “and let us take back our land.” She had never explicitly mentioned the bit about taking back the land before. It went largely unnoticed as electioneering rhetoric for the masses; however, several business owners and other political party members raised an eyebrow when she said it this time.

The media went predictably nuts, combined with the organised social media drama. Television crews, social media influencers and anyone with a recording device or cell phone attended the voting venues. The common question everyone was asking, was who they would be voting for and why, and what they thought about Elaine’s money box campaign.

The responses at the voting booths across the Cape were unanimous. Everyone approved of it and everyone had their own plans of what they would do if they received the last R10m cheque. And of-course they would be voting for Elaine Pecker.

Lucky made sure that the R10m money box would be among the many that would be distributed on Tuesday, after voting had been concluded.

All the churches and mosques were still giving away money boxes which contained smaller amounts, however, everyone knew that R10m cheque was still in play, because Elaine had said so.

The voting stations closed at nine pm, and at exactly 21:15 some lucky person at a mosque in Lucky’s area opened the money box containing the final R10m cheque.
