In prison he had nearly been the victim of a gang rape by one of the rival gangs, but his rabid and manic ego fuelled a fight so severe that after killing two of his attackers with the aid of a blunt spoon, he resorted to ripping out the throat of his third attacker with his bare teeth. The other two convicts ran away from the scene after that, and his reputation as an insane killer was established in prison and beyond. Everybody had a little fear of the unknown, and Stanley was the unknown.

The only person who loved him unconditionally and genuinely believed him to be a peace-loving calm man, was Marcella, his beautiful young daughter. Marcella lived in Italy, in the small picturesque sea-side town of Positano. Now 11 years old, Marcella was the result of a brief and passionate encounter between Stanley and a hotel chamber maid in Positano. When Lucia died during childbirth, Stanley was at her side and vowed that he would provide for their daughter and take care of Lucia’s family.

He explained to Lucia’s mother, Donatella, why Marcella could not live with him in Cape Town. Donatella, who had already suspected Stanley’s links to the underworld, understood completely, having had first-hand experience of the Mafia code of Omerta.

Stanley bought Donatella a modest villa in Positano and paid her a monthly allowance which more than covered her and Marcella’s expenses. He also learnt to speak fluent Italian and thanks to his regular visits (at least 4 times a year) to Marcella, his daughter held him in very high regard.

During the days immediately after Marcella’s birth, Stanley would sit and stare at his beautiful daughter for hours. He wasn’t really that heartbroken about Lucia, since they had hardly really known each other, but he was sorry for her death, and grateful to her for the incredible gift, that was his daughter. Not many people in Cape Town knew of his secret love child and his interests in Italy.

Stanley was happy, since the relatively new on the scene, crystal meth (methamphetamine) known locally as "tik", had hit the Cape Flats in various guises, business was booming. Also, he was shagging a gorgeous minister’s daughter who came from a highly conservative and respected white Afrikaans family.

Aletta Badenhorst was in her late thirties; she was tall and statuesque. Her long blonde hair was always coiffed and subjected to gallons of hairspray. She had been raised in the strict Calvanistic way of her “Boer” and Dutch forefathers. Her radiant blue eyes were always happy and smiling. However, she was a serious prude, having been raised by her late Dominee father, she believed that sex was only to be engaged in for procreation and to feel pleasure from it was a sin.

She married a man she hardly knew at the age of 17, at the encouragement of her father.

“Gerhardus Badenhorst is a big strong, God-fearing Afrikaner man and you will bear him many strong sons,” her father told her before the wedding.

The sad truth was that Gerhardus, although a sweet soul, had a non-existent sperm count, and after 20 years of childless, and often mind-numbingly boring marriage, Gerhardus asked Aletta for a divorce, fully thinking that she was the reason for their barren marriage. And if he was free of Aletta, he could approach the widow Pretorius who had already given birth to three strapping boerseuns!

Since her father, bless his soul, had passed away earlier that year, Aletta was strangely relieved at Gerhardus’ request and granted him the divorce. That same year she also moved to the city, Cape Town city, which she found had an appealing energy and tension which was lacking in the rural town of Grabouw where she was born and had lived all her life. She found a job in the Cape Town Library, since that was all the experience she had. And thanks to a sex in the library scandal involving the former librarian, Aletta was employed immediately, especially when her boss, Mrs Koekemoer, saw on her CV that her father had been preacher.

Aletta’s conservative dress sense, hid a curvy, sexy body. Her Dutch genes ensured that she had long legs, large, firm breasts and a very athletic physique all round. Stanley walked into the library on Aletta’s first day of employment. Not believing in paying for literature, Stanley had always used the library to read anything or to do research, he continued reading about Italy and improving his Italian.

He noticed Aletta immediately as he walked into the large, high-ceiling-ed library. The place was typical of old established libraries, dark wooden shelves, soft lighting and an air of musty education. He smiled at her and she nodded back politely. He wondered what had happened to the raging pervert that had occupied her position before. That woman was an obvious minx, despite her snooty attitude. He would not be surprised if she had been fired for sleeping with the boss or something.

Now he was searching for a language activator Italian dictionary which his Italian-language on-line chat room buddies had recommended. He went to the travel section, nothing, the foreign languages section, nothing… where else he wondered…

Eventually he went to the front desk. “Excuse me,” he said very politely, flashing a broad smile. Aletta was somewhat startled as she did not hear his approach. But she recovered quickly. “Yes sir, how can we help?", she said in a very heavy Afrikaans accent. Stanley noticed her perfect teeth and radiant eyes and the… large…. very large coiffed blonde beehive hairdo.

“Excuse me, Aletta,” Stanley repeated again, “I am looking for an Italian language activator dictionary.” Aletta was taken aback a bit by this handsome, if somewhat scary stranger with the incredible eyes, dark skin and impossibly white teeth.

“But how do you know my name?” Aletta replied.

“Because it says so on your name tag, unless you are wearing someone else’s blouse?” Stanley turned up the charm a notch.

Aletta’s face burned scarlet as she blushed out her embarrassment. “Oh sorry.” She stammered. Stanley reached across the desk and took her hand in his, and said, “Not to worry, do you know if you have anything in that area?” Aletta felt his touch like a bolt of electricity, but for some inexplicable reason, did not take her hand away. “Let me check the system sir,” she said.

 “Please, call me Stanley.”

“I’m sorry sir, we don’t seem to have anything on file,” she seemed genuinely sorry.

“Hmmm what are we to do about it?” Stanley replied looking pensive.

“Well, I could send an email to our associate library in Europe, they might be able to send us a copy,”

“Really? Wow, that would be great,” Stanley said adding, “You’re new here, aren’t you? Where’s the other woman?”

“Yes sir,” She started. “Stanley, please” he interrupted. She smiled “Yes Stanley, I arrived from Grabouw yesterday.”

“Oh, so you must have family and friends here then.”

“No, I just wanted to live in the big city.”

“Well, that is just wrong!” said Stanley in mock horror. “A beautiful lady like you should never be alone.”

She smiled again, warming to his obvious charm. She noticed his piercing green eyes again.

“In fact, Aletta, please don’t think I am being presumptuous, but it would be an honour and my pleasure to take you to dinner tonight.” Aletta seemed nervous and slightly bemused. She had never been propositioned by a man, much less wooed. All she could think of was not to be rude or impolite. Yet something in Stanley’s eyes made her tingle with a slight fear. She liked the fear.

“Actually, that would be nice Stanley.”
