He also noted that the negative articles where a lot less than the positive coverage. Many of the recipients of the money boxes had a lot to say about how they planned to invest their little bit of money to uplift their community. A lot of it was idealistic and quite impossible to achieve, but it made for great headlines and kept the feel-good factor bubbling over.

It also created a massive word-of-mouth effect not just across the Western Cape, but across the entire country.

After the third day, Natasha Wakefield issued a press release on Johan’s behalf. The core message of the press release was that Johan had made donations to the three major political parties as he did for every election. He also applauded the innovated marketing efforts by the United Coloured Party to mobilise the electorate.

“It is certainly unorthodox, however, not illegal,” Johan was quoted as saying. “We need this kind of out-of-the-box thinking to make a difference.”

One of the media outlets quoted Johan as applauding the United Coloured Party for thinking “out of the money box.”

Although he did not actually say those words, he thought the headline was clever.

As was the norm with these donations, the official amounts remained undisclosed by all parties concerned.

However, both of the United Coloured Party’s realistic rivals in the Western Cape suddenly wondered how much Johan had donated to the United Coloured Party compared to how much he had given them.

The timing of Johan’s press release kept the media interest at a sustained peak. The headlines also reflected the other party’s concerns.

“Is Baatjies bankrolling Elaine?” asked the DC.

“Racist Baatjies only cares about Coloureds,” said a spokesperson from the ANC.

“Is Baatjies the money behind the moneybox?” Questioned the Conservative Party.

These headlines carried the usual unnamed sources and inuendo designed to cause doubt and confusion. However, it was carefully juxtaposed by ongoing reports about more church services and ongoing money box handouts. Two days after Johan’s press release hit the headlines, it happened.

The only thing pleasant about Lavender Hill was its name. It was a suburb in the South of Cape Town, close to the ocean, which was notorious for its rife gangsterism. Not a weekend went by when someone wasn’t killed or raped or assaulted as a result of the unchecked gang warfare and drug abuse.

This time however, Lavender Hill made the headlines for all the right reasons.
