The Saturday morning online headlines shouted out the news in huge capital letters. A local resident from Lavender Hill, Jerome Malgas, had received the first R10m money box. He was pictured in riotous rapture with his family and the all the residents of the block of dilapidated flats where he lived.

A day later however, the next phase of Johan’s plan was allowed to emerge. Arranged behind the scenes by Natasha, Stanley and Elaine traveled separately to congratulate Jerome.

Stanley and Elaine posed for a photo with Jerome, holding a bigger mock-up of the original cheque.

The amount on the cheque read R30m!

“I want to go on record that I support this initiative 100% and as a local businessman and an ardent supporter of our communities, I applaud Elaine Pecker and her party for wanting to make a real difference.” Stanley was introduced in the article as a local businessman who matched the R10m found in the moneybox. He was described as having been born and raised in the area and as having made is fortune in imports and exports.

Nothing more was said about Stanley Jantjies and for some inexplicable reason, all inquiries by the press ended after the first response.

To the untrained eye it seems like total chaos, but the truth was that every post, every Tik-Tok, almost every single piece of information about Elaine Pecker and her campaign was now carefully being orchestrated to maintain front page coverage until the election, a week away.

The surprising effect, although Johan did expect it, was that quite a few legitimate small businesses in the Coloured communities offered their support to the campaign. This gave the campaign a stronger feel of authenticity.
