Chapter 52: Whitey Must Die

Saturday came and went without the third R10m cheque being claimed. Social media had now been joined by the mainstream press in building up the expectation to breaking point. It literally was the headline news story on every news channel. There were also reports of people from all races and from all over the country attending the church services on the Cape Flats and Cape Platteland.

“Third R10m cheque to be discovered on Sunday.” Was the new headline touted by all the media.

And as a result, the Sunday church services were so over attended and the queues at the stalls so long, that the police had to be called in, in some cases, to keep the crowd under control.

It was Sunday afternoon; the voting booths would open up at 8am tomorrow. And even now, at this late hour, the third cheque remained undiscovered.

Shawn noted that on the last two occasions he needed to talk to Whitey, he was only able to get through to Lucky, who confirmed that Whitey had given him permission to talk on his behalf.

Slightly annoyed about it, Shawn accepted it though, as Whitey was well-known for his unpredictability and arrogance.

Shawn smiled quietly to himself as he realised that Johan’s plan was going to work. He had a small concern about one of the big Platteland municipalities which was a traditional ANC stronghold and was headed up by the reliable Tony Frenchman. But he was sure that Whitey’s network in the area would win the day.

The third R10m cheque was supposed to be discovered in an area controlled by Whitey, on Saturday.

Things were not going according to plan.

Shawn finally got through to Lucky, who had actively been avoiding his calls all weekend. Lucky knew what was going on and he knew what the solution was, but he wasn’t sure if he was up to the task.

Shawn had called someone else in his network to get the message to Lucky late on Sunday afternoon. The message was simple, “answer your phone next time I call, or risk an all-out war.”

Lucky knew that he had to make absolutely sure that he was not seen. He knew where Whitey and Themba were and he also knew how to get there. It would take about an hour and a half to get there on foot, but he had no choice, he could not risk driving there, or even having someone drive him there.

He also knew the cabin where Whitey and Themba were quite well, having spent time with Whitey and some of the other gang members there from time to time. It was always his responsibility to keep the cabin stocked with food and cleaning supplies.

Whitey, as everyone who knew him, knew, was an obsessive clean freak.
