Obviously, Malik played the Michael Jackson character and his lithe physique made it easy for him to mimic Jackson’s moves. After one routine, the crowd actually broke out into spontaneous applause, causing Wasiela’s group to stop laughing and casually stroll over.
Malik had already begun his new moves when Wasiela muscled her way through the crowd. She watched in awe as Malik’s body executed the suggestive struts and shimmies, his face exactly mirroring those of the superstar. He spun on the balls of his feet, and kicked out his leg, grabbing his crotch while shaking his upper frame, all the time mouthing the words to the song. When he eventually came to a stop, he felt Wasiela’s stare and turned around. They made eye contact for a second, before she turned away.
But it was enough; all they needed was a second.
Later, in the club, in the dark disco with lights flashing and the music pounding, Malik did the moves again, this time to the raucous encouragement of everyone in the club. Another group of guys had practiced the same routine, but although those guys were technically sound, Malik’s presence made the difference as the crowd’s choice for best performance.
Again, he caught Wasiela staring, again she turned her head quickly, though slower than the last time. He smiled, but ignored her for the rest of the afternoon, until ten minutes before the matinee session ended at 18:00.
“Hello, I’m Malik, what’s your name,” Malik smiled broadly.
Wasiela was caught completely off guard. Having decided that Malik was an arrogant fool for not responding to her looks, she had tried to forget about him for the rest of the afternoon.
Usually, she responded in brash gaudy fashion to unwanted attention. This time however, she was at a loss for words, she stared up at him. She tried to talk, but nothing came out. “Can I buy you a drink?” Malik continued. She nodded her head. He noticed that she had been drinking rum and coke.
“What the hell is wrong with you?” her friend exclaimed when Malik had left to get her drink.
“I have no idea, I can’t fucking talk,” Wasiela exclaimed exasperated.
“Take a shot of this,” her friend thrust the glass of rum and coke into her hand.
Desperate for any kind of remedy, Wasiela, took a huge swig and felt tears welling up in her eyes as the rum scorched its way down her throat. “What the fuck!, have some coke with your rum next time why don’t you,” she spluttered to her friend.
“Here you go,” Malik held out her drink.
“Fucking hell,” Wasiela heard herself say. She did not know if it was the rum, but suddenly she felt better, more controlled and smiled up towards Malik.
“So, what do you want Mister,” she said to him confidently.
“For starters, your number, and secondly, do you have a white dress in your clothing cupboard?” he asked her with an amused look in his eyes.
“What?
" Yes of course I have.” She responded enjoying the humour.
“Good”
“But why do you ask?” she was curious.
“Well, the restaurant I am taking you to dinner tonight has a dress code and I think you would look pretty in a white dress.”
Wasiela liked the confidence, and the naughty twinkle in his eye worked its magic.
Malik remembered that night so well. They had had such a great time, and it was clear to both of them that they were soulmates of some sort. Even so, she would not let him near her panties until they had dated for three long months.
Malik knew Wasiela wanted out of this life and he knew that she was giving him time to make it happen. He felt it needed to be soon, he sensed her drifting away from him from time to time and he did not like it. He even wondered if she had met someone at pottery or book club or whatever she did. But he knew that she would never be unfaithful, she would leave him first, if it ever came to that. He did not want it to come to that. He needed to talk to her about Johan’s deal; he needed her input and advice for his family.
