Parents of little ones like Zoë Hofmeester (see Family Focus article) will have to prepare and condition them for a virtual school experience where they get up in the morning and go to school, which will be a room in the house with a desk and a massive big screen where lessons are presented by an AI teacher.

Sevenplus used to operate as an in-person experience from offices in Parow, then Goodwood a few years ago, but the Covid pandemic forced the outfit to go online. “It has kinda been a blessing in disguise,” says Stanton. “The live on-line experience allows us to reach more learners and allows for a more flexible learning experience. Like, if learners miss a class, they can access a video recording of it later, for example.”
Stanton says Sevenplus’ pass rate is similar to the national education pass rate, but that online education comes with its own challenges.
“Not everyone adapts successfully to the online experience and many younger leaners drop out in the first year. Those who succeed possess two qualities that are vital for online education success. It’s the double D’s, desire and determination. You have to know why you are doing this, you need an objective. If you’re doing it to please mom and dad because you dropped out of high school too soon, it probably won’t work the first time around.” Sevenplus focusses primarily on learners who want to obtain their Matric or Grade 12 Certificate and they would need to have had successfully completed Grade 9 to apply.
“Our older, learners, looking for a second chance to improve their career prospects and self-worth, are often the ones who achieve the best results because they have a focused desire and outcome and they are single-mindedly determined to achieve it.”
I’m not even trying to oversell their achievements. The testimonials on the website speak for themselves. During my chat with Stanton, he speaks with visible passion and emotion about Sevenplus.
